Southern Georgian Style Home

Topsfield
Massachusetts

This home was designed for a trasplanted Southern Lady who wanted some of the Old South in Massachusetts.  The specific inspiration for this design was Westover, a mid 17th Century Plantation home of Virginia.  The builder was allowed to make some unfortunate modifications to the design that I created that in my eyes, diminishes the quality of the design, such as the front doorway surround and window above which are poor modern substitutions of the specified design.   Otherwise, it is a fine large home.  The presence of fireplaces in the end walls is a feature that did not occur much, if at all, in the northern states until the Federal style began about 1780.  But in the southern states, as here, it was not uncommon.
